Tim Lambesis Arraignment Video Surfaces

The arraignment video of Tim Lambesis has surfaced with the reading of the criminal complaint. As a man who has been known as a man of faith (although As I Lay Dying refuses to label the band as "Christian") allegedly emailed his wife and told her he no longer loved her, no longer believed in God and wanted a divorce. The prosecution alleges that Lambesis approached a fellow gym member and asked if they knew someone who would kill his wife. Watch the short video below.

Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying) Arrested

In case you live under a rock and didn't know, Tim Lambesis, frontman of As I Lay Dying, was arrested yesterday for attempting to hire someone to murder his estranged wife.  Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for his wife), the person he solicited as a hitman was an undercover detective.

Not much information has been released, but we do know that he is being held in the Vista Detention Center and he will be arraigned on May 9th, 2013 at 1:30 pm. No bail is currently set on his charges of Solicit to Commit Murder and Conspiracy to Commit a Crime. More information can be found on the San Diego Sheriff's Office website.

In The News: Slayer's Jeff Hanneman Dies of Liver Failure

I have been MIA again. Lots of ideas, but even more writer’s block. When I saw the news today, I knew I had to get my ass in gear and inform the For the Love of Rock and Metal family of a great loss.

Earlier today, Slayer founding member and guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away. He was suffering from liver failure and was at a local hospital at the time of his death. Hanneman was 49 years old and will always be remembered for the part he played in bringing Slayer to the forefront of metal. He and fellow guitarist Kerry King, singer-bassist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo started tearing up stages in the early 1980s.

Lately, Hanneman has not been touring regularly with the band. He contracted necrotizing fasciitis following a spider bite in 2011 which has kept him plagued with many health problems since then. Recently, there has been talk that he had been out of touch with the band. Other news outlets are reporting that the liver failure was likely caused by alcohol and not the spider bite and necrotizing fasciitis; however, nothing has been confirmed and either way, it is not a time to speculate. The truth is that metal has lost one of its own and that is all that matters. No need for blame, finger pointing or hate. The only reason I address it at all is because I know there will be questions.

Slayer posted this heart breaking status update on Facebook to notify the fans. Feel free to go to their page and show some love.

"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)"

Robert Zildjian Dies at 89

The following was posted on Sabian's website sometime Thursday afternoon (3-28-2013). The battle between Sabian and Zildjian cymbals is a typical sibling rivalry story, but today everyone is mourning over the death of the founder of Sabian.

"It is with deep, deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert "RZ" Zildjian, our beloved founder and leader. A tireless and dynamic force within the drum industry, he inspired each one of us in the Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther, to make a difference - and he led us by example.
His professional story is well known. Having been dealt a major career setback at an age where most men would have opted for retirement, RZ instead chose to re-invent the cymbal business with his own hand-crafted brand, a brand that would forever change the face and sound of popular music. With his bare hands he shaped the Sabian cymbal brand into his life's story - and by extension we became his family.
We mourn his passing, and he will be forever in our hearts. But we are better people for having known RZ, and we are richer for having worked alongside him. We draw comfort from the knowledge that his spirit will live on in the music made by drummers the world over.
Rest in peace, RZ."

Robb Flynn Discusses Split with Bassist Adam Duce

You may or may not have heard that after 21 years in Machine Head, bassist Adam Duce has left the band. They call it an amicable split, but after reading Robb Flynn's journal entry about it, I'm not so sure. There seems to be a lot of hurt there and he calls it "civil," which in my mind is different than amicable. Flynn is now the only remaining original member of the band. It's the nature of the beast. Bands grow and then grow apart. Sometimes they split up, sometimes members leave, sometimes members are asked to leave. It seems like a glamorous job (and I'm sure sometimes it is) but it is a constant give and take, a lot of pressure, and has the need for everyone to be on the same page.

Here is the text from Flynn's journal on the Machine Head website:

Randy Blythe's Trial Delayed

http://wtvr.com/2013/02/07/randy-blythe-trial-day-4/

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe's trial for manslaughter in the Czech Republic started earlier this week. It was expected to be finished by the end of the week; however, some unforeseen circumstances have caused the trial to be delayed. Blythe's defense team asked to push the trial back due to one of their witnesses being ill as well as two other key witnesses being unable to attend the trial this week. After the last of the testimony today, Blythe is expected to return to the United States until the trial resumes on March 4, 2013.

The only person to testify today before the trial is delayed for another month was Lukas Havlena, who contacted Blythe's defense after hearing some of the witness accounts of Blythe being "aggressive" at the show on the night in question that ultimately led to Daniel Nosek's death. Havlena told the court that Blythe was not aggressive and anything that could be construed that way was just part of the show. Additionally, he said that Blythe and his security personnel made it clear that fans were not allowed on stage.

When the trial resumes next month, some of Havlena's friends as well as security personnel are expected to testify. Blythe maintains that he will once again return to the Czech Republic in order to stand trial. Blythe maintains his innocence and reminds people that this case is very sad and that it is not the fault of the Czech Republic, who many of his fans have been raging against. He issued a statement on Instagram today that read as follows:

"I have read a few news reports of the progress of my case, and trust me- many things are incorrect. But this is the Internet, and of course things are half-baked anyway. Keep in mind that translation is difficult, and many things can be lost, for Czech is a VERY DIFFICULT language. So wait and see, as I am. It is all I can do, except be honest & fight for my freedom in my own way.

I also have heard of some people (not on here) talking smack about the Czech Republic, saying "Fuck the Czech Republic", etc. This not how it should be. This is a very sad case, not something to rage at people you do not know over.

I am not angry with the Czechs at all. A fan of my band is dead- what do I have to be angry about? I am an INNOCENT man, but I am also a very sad man right now. To not be sad in this instance would be inhuman. But mad at the Czech people? Why would I be mad at them?

Here, look at this picture- a mother watches her baby. The child reaches out for something new, laughing and chasing a pretty picture in the air. It is the same here as everywhere else. Do you see?!?!?

Life is beautiful. I hope to see y'all soon."

New "Super-Band" Lineup Announced

Photo from Buzznet

As many of you may know, David Draiman has put together a new industrial band called Device. If you do the whole Twitter thing, you can follow them here. We've been waiting to find out who is going to be on the album and who might be making an appearance in any live shows, but the wait is finally over.

On Device's debut album, there will be an all-star lineup. Bassist Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), singer and bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) and frontman M. Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold) will all be heard on the new album. Singer Serj Tankian (System of a Down), guitarist Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) and Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) will all also be appearing. As you can see, this creates quite the "super-band." Many people know how I feel about super-bands, but in case you didn't know - I don't usually enjoy them. Sometimes it turns out great, sometimes the mixture of styles (and egos) can be problematic. None of them are a permanent member of the band, so maybe this will work out.

As far as live shows go, the drummer from Evanescence and Dark New Day, Will Hunt, will be involved as well as the Dope and Eve to Adam guitarist Virus, who happens to be one of my favorite guitarists. Geno Lenardo, former guitarist for Filter, is also in the live lineup and is the only other permanent member.
Photo from Guitar Quest
The first single, "Villify," is expected to hit the radio on February 19th and a music video for the song was recorded yesterday. The full album should be released April 9th, 2013.

So, what do you think? Are you surprised by the lineup and special appearances? And what do you think of super-bands made up of established musicians from a variety of bands?

Three Days Grace Singer Leaves the Band

Ethan Miller, Getty Images / Liz Ramanand, Loudwire

Just a few weeks before their tour starts, Three Days Grace announces that vocalist Adam Gontier is leaving the band due to a non-life-threatening health issue. The band knew in December that Gontier was leaving, but that he wanted to the band to go on without him.

My Darkest Days lead singer Matt Walst (brother of bassist Brad Walst) will be filling in for Gontier in their upcoming tour. The band's future is still seemingly uncertain, but if it goes well with Matt Walst, maybe it will be a permanent move. This possibility leaves My Darkest Days on shaky grounds in the future as well, especially after the loss of their guitarist, Sal Costa last week.

Three Days Grace's tour will be starting on February 1st and is scheduled to go through the end of March with Brad Walst on vocals for the entire tour. The band has released the following statement regarding Gontier's departure on their website:

"We appreciate everyone’s concern about Three Days Grace. We found out on December 21st that Adam wished to resign from the band. In a letter to us Adam indicated that he was resigning from the band due to a non life threatening health issue and wanted the band to continue moving forward without him. We were as shocked as many of you were to hear the news. Three Days Grace has always been and will continue to be not only our job but our passion. Instead of cancelling the tour, we felt an obligation to you, the fans, to forge ahead and put on the best show we can. Brad recently reached out to his brother Matt Walst, lead singer for ‘My Darkest Days’ to fill in for the tour dates already announced. We’ve been hanging out and rehearsing with Matt and look forward to rocking the stage in a few weeks! As of right now, Matt’s role is temporary and as far as the future and beyond this tour, we are taking it one day at a time. – 3DG"

The band posted a few tracks of Walst practicing with the band as lead singer. I'm going to be completely honest... I don't really like it. Maybe I need to have a little time to adjust to it and maybe I need to hear it live and after more practice. Below is one of their new songs "Chalk Outline," which I think is the best of the three they posted. The first one I listened to was "Riot" and it just doesn't sound like the same band. Of course, I don't expect it to be the same band because it is a different singer, but I guess I just don't like change. I hope this isn't the end of Three Days Grace because I do enjoy them as far as rock bands go. So, listen to the one below and if you're interested check out the other two here and let me know what you think of this lineup change.

Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Arrested for Sex Abuse Charges

When you go on www.lostprophets.com, you will find one simple message.

"Following charges made today against Ian Watkins, we find ourselves in a state of shock. We are learning about the details of the investigation along with you. It is a difficult time for us and our families, and we want to thank our fans for their support as we seek answers."

Jamie, Lee, Luke, Mike and Stu

Wakins, 35, was arrested yesterday on charges of two counts of conspiring to engage in sexual touching with two young children and possession, making and distribution of indecent images of children as well as possessing extreme animal pornography. Two women, ages 20 and 24, were also arrested in conjunction with this case. The charges for conspiracy have a date range of May 1st to December 17th and the indecent images charges have a date range of August 12th to December 17th.

Watkins' lawyer attempted to procure bail for him, stating that his celebrity status would help insure that he wouldn't go into hiding and his mother pledged her home as surety that he would appear at his next court date. It was determined that he would remain in custody at least until his next court date at Cardiff Crown Court on December 31st.

The band is in shock and has issued the statement above as a result of this arrest. They have also cancelled a planned tour.

Update: Randy Blythe Legal Situation

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com
A few weeks ago, Randy Blythe was officially indicted for the 2010 death of a concert-goer. At that time, the court was obliged to either set a trial date or postpone it in order for the prosecutor to collect more evidence.

Late last week, it was announced that Blythe's trial will begin on February 4th, 2013 and is expected to last approximately 4 days. Blythe previously stated that if he was indicted, he would return to the Czech Republic to stand trial and would not hide out. Blythe and his legal team still maintain his innocence in the manslaughter case.

You can read his original statement here regarding the arrest, his return home last summer, and any future proceedings.

Metallica Unveils New Record Label

Photo from RollingStone.com
We all knew it was coming. Metallica is one of the biggest names in the music world and they have launched their new record label. It's been chattered about recently, but we weren't sure what they were going to call it. Honestly, there were so many available options for names. They recently unveiled the label and its name, Blackened Recordings.

One of the more amazing things about this is that in 1994, they negotiated an almost unheard of contract provision with Warner Bros that means that they have complete control over and ownership of  their master recordings. Their 28 year relationship with Warner Bros has ended with the creation of their new label and they now have control over their already-produced music and videos as well as control over all future music. It means an entirely new sense of independence that comes from producing your own music without an outside company exerting power over it. Good for you Metallica. I hope you can do much better than St. Anger, which was a disappointment to all.

Paul Gray's Doctor Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter

Daniel Baldi, a physician that helped run a pain management clinic, has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in the deaths of 8 people. Included is Slipknot's Paul Gray, who was found dead in a hotel in 2010. According to the Des Moines Register, the documents released allege that Dr. Baldi “did unintentionally cause the death of Paul Gray by the commission of an act likely to cause death or serious injury, to-wit, continually wrote high-dose prescription narcotics to a known drug addict from 12/27/2005 until his death.”

In the documents, 7 of 8 of the deceased were listed, including Paul Gray. In addition, the other people are Chad Martin (Sept. 16, 2011), Frederick Pritchard (May 29, 2011), Carla Davis (Feb. 25, 2011), Jason Spong (Sept. 16, 2010), Stoutenberg (Sept. 11, 2010), and Jeff Lilly (Aug. 21, 2009). The final person who is not listed is believed to be Kathleen Cronkwright (October, 2010). You may wonder why I included everyone here. I did it because it is tragic, no matter who they are and no matter if they happen to be famous, drug addicts, or anything like that. It also shows a patter for Dr. Baldi. This is a lot of people to be considered a fluke.

Some family members of the other people have come forward to say that Baldi should have known that the patients were habitual drug abusers and taken steps to prevent their deaths and especially stop prescribing large amounts of prescription narcotics. Some patients allegedly only saw the doctor once each; however in at least one case, a family member has stepped forward to say that they personally accompanied the patients to his office on more than one occasion.

Now, here's the thing. Generally, I'm all about personal accountability. And in this case, I am still in support of it; however, I believe that physicians have a lawful duty and a moral obligation to not take advantage of or feed into drug addiction. With prescription drug abuse spiking, it is more important than ever that they are cognizant of it, especially when dealing with someone who is a know drug addict (specifically, it was not a secret that Gray struggled with drug problems). Sure, I don't think he should be charged with murder, but involuntary manslaughter seems to fit. It will not help the 8 patients referenced in this case, but it could protect patients that may have seen him in the future and will make other physicians aware that they need to be safer and more cognizant of their patients' needs.

Slipknot has released the following statement after the charges were announced:

“As the loss of our brother Paul Gray is still very fresh for us in the Slipknot family, this new development has us all in a state of anger and sadness. The fact that this person took advantage of our brother’s illness while he was in a position to help others has outraged everyone in our family.
"We can only hope that justice will be served so this can NEVER happen to anyone else ever again! Our thoughts go out to the families of the other victims. We plan to cooperate as much as we possibly can to ensure this tragedy is never repeated, and to make sure this man pays for what he has done."

Randy Blythe Official Statement

Here is the official statement from Randy Blythe:

Greetings. This is D. Randall Blythe, checking in from my beloved hometown of Richmond, VA, United States of America. I was recently released on bail from Pankrác Prison in Prague, Czech Republic, after over a month of incarceration. Now that I am out for the moment, I would like to say a few things.

1. While in prison, I had minimal knowledge of how my case was viewed anywhere but the Czech Republic. I was told by my attorney that I had a lot support from peers in the music industry, my hometown, fans, and of course my family. I cannot express how emotional it made me upon my release to read about even a fraction of the voices that were raised on my behalf. From legends in my music community, to fans across the world, and even people who were previously unaware of my existence but sympathized with my plight- I am truly humbled. I cannot thank you enough for your thoughts and prayers. I would especially like to thank the people of Richmond, VA, for standing by me. In the 48 hours I have been home, many people I have never met before have stopped me on the street, waved and smiled as I passed by, or said hello in a restaurant. All have said "We are glad you are home, Randy". You all make me proud and grateful that I call Richmond home.

2. I would like state that I suffered no abuse, from either authorities or inmates, during my incarceration in Pankrác. I received no special treatment, and was in general population with everyone else- make no mistake, it was prison, not some celebrity rehab tv show. But I was treated fairly by the guards and kindly by my fellow inmates. People are dying of starvation all over the world. Men and women are losing their lives daily in the Middle East and other war torn regions. I had food, clothes, shelter, and no one was trying to kill me. I cannot complain over a short stay in prison while many people elsewhere fight to survive on a daily basis.

3. If it is deemed necessary for me to do so, I WILL return to Prague to stand trial. While I maintain my innocence 100%, and will do so steadfastly, I will NOT hide in the United States, safe from extradition and possible prosecution. As I write this, the family of a fan of my band suffers through the indescribably tragic loss of their child. They have to deal with constantly varying media reports about the circumstances surrounding his death. I am charged with maliciously causing severe bodily harm to this young man, resulting in his death. While I consider the charge leveled against me ludicrous and without qualification, my opinion makes no difference in this matter. The charge exists, and for the family of this young man, questions remain. The worst possible pain remains. It is fairly common knowledge amongst fans of my band that I once lost a child as well. I, unfortunately, am intimately familiar with what their pain is like. Therefore, I know all too well that in their time of grief, this family needs and deserves some real answers, not a media explosion followed by the accused killer of their son hiding like a coward thousands of miles away while they suffer. I am a man. I was raised to face my problems head on, not run from them like a petulant child. I hope that justice is done, and the family of Daniel N. will receive the closure they undoubtably need to facilitate healing. I feel VERY STRONGLY that as an adult, it would be both irresponsible and immoral for me not to return to Prague if I am summoned. This is not about bail money. This is about a young man who lost his life. I will act with honor, and I will fight to clear my good name in this matter. Thank you for reading this, and I wish you all peace.

Update: Randy Blythe and Knotfest Lineup

News came down today that Randy Blythe was released from a Czech jail on bail. In a closed session, it was decided that he could be released with the only condition that the bail be paid (which it had been previously). He boarded a flight back to the US shortly after his release. He may still need to return to the Czech Republic for a trial regarding the 2010 death of a fan. It is reported that his defense team has a strong case. Randy said he is relieved to be out of jail and that it wasn't bad, but "it wasn't exactly fun."
Related to the news of his release is the news that Lamb of God has been put back on the Knotfest bill and will be playing both shows (Aug 17 in Iowa, Aug 18 in Wisconsin).
Check out the video below to hear Randy's interview after his release. He is expected to release an official statement soon.

Concert Update: Knotfest Lineup Change

Due to the current situation with Lamb of God's Randy Blythe still being denied bail and still incarcerated, Lamb of God and Dethklok have cancelled their tour and will not be at Knotfest. So far, one replacement has been announced as Machine Head was added to the lineup and another one should be added in the next day or two.

The lineup is still completely awesome. On Saturday August 18th, 2012, Slipknot will be joined by Deftones, Serj Tankian, Cannibal Corpse and many more in Somerset, WI at the Somerset Amphitheater. Tickets are only $45 and still available!

In the News: Randy Blythe

Randy Blythe Arrested on Suspicion of
Manslaughter in Fan's 2010 Death

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe was arrested last week on suspicion of manslaughter in the 2010 death of a fan who repeatedly rushed the stage. Ultimately, it is alleged that Blythe pushed the fan back into the crowd after the 3rd time he rushed the stage. He hit his head, slipped into a coma and died two weeks later as a result of the injury.

It was originally announced that the singer was released on bail and ordered to remain in Czech Republic until the investigation is completed, but has now been released that he posted bail but they are still holding him and refusing his release. The rest of the band has returned to the US and is requesting that fans do not inquire about the case as it would be "irresponsible" for them to comment on the ongoing investigation.

Blythe's family, friends, band mates and the entire metal community have rallied around him.  Supportive messages are being seen from Chris Kael (Five Finger Death Punch), David Draiman (Disturbed), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), Slash, Scott Ian (Anthrax) and other big names in the metal community. Many are citing the December 8th, 2004 shooting death of Dimebag Darrell while on stage.

Unfortunately, sometimes bands have to fear for their safety as public icons. In my opinion, the fan should have been escorted out and should not have been given the chance to rush the stage and Blythe 3 times. Also in my opinion, Blythe had every right to defend himself from a fan that was behaving erratically and unpredictably. Yes, fans jump on stage. And yes, sometimes bands don't mind. However, if a fan is removed from the stage twice, then obviously they shouldn't be on stage. The fan's death is sad. It really is. But should we really hold Randy Blythe responsible for something that was not malicious or (in my opinion) negligent?

Today in the News: Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath Diagnosed with Lymphoma

Ok, ok... I know this isn't local or regional and I swear I'll get out to some more shows soon. But, as a lover of all things rock and metal, I do like to share national and international band news (both good and band) with others who might be interested. Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with lymphoma, but the plans for the first album in 33 years are still on track. Check out this article about this news (text below) and send out any good thoughts that you have for him. And since we're on the subject - anyone who wants to get me his book, "Iron Man," I would greatly appreciate it.  :)

Article written by Billboard Staff

Billboard.com Photo from quoted article

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma but a new album for the legendary metal band is still on track, it was announced Monday.

Iommi, 63, is currently working with his doctors to determine the best course and "remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery," a statement said.

In November, the group -- Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward -- announced album and tour plans. While the statement does not indicate whether live dates will be affected, the band continues to write and record their first album in over three decades. Rick Rubin will produce the group's comeback album, which is expected to be released in fall 2012 through Vertigo/Universal.

The metal pioneers are scheduled to headline Download Festival, which will take place between June 8-10 in Donington Park, England.

Since the original lineup came together in 1968, the English metal pioneers have scored album sales of 15 million, according to the RIAA. Between 1970 and 2007, Black Sabbath have had 22 entries on the Billboard 200, and their biggest-selling effort -- 1970's "Paranoid," which featured classic rock tracks like "Iron Man" and "War Pigs" -- has sold 1.6 million in the SoundScan era.

The lineup of Osbourne, Iommi, Butler and Ward released its last album, "Never Say Die," in 1978; the disc has sold 133,000 copies in the SoundScan era. Osbourne split with Black Sabbath in 1979 and went on to a hugely successful solo career, with hits like "Crazy Train," "Mr. Crowley" and "Shot in the Dark." He rejoined the band in 1997 and toured on-and-off with them through 2006, but the only new material produced was two songs tacked onto a 1998 live album.

Iommi, who wrote extensively about the band in his recent book "Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven & Hell With Black Sabbath," told Billboard.com that he regrouped with Osbourne, bassist Butler and drummer Ward at Osbourne's California home in early 2011 to play some music "for a bit of fun, and to see if we could all play. It was good, but it was just purely, 'Let's have a go and see what happens.'"
